I've had the 3D printing bug for a long time, and finally got my first printer!

I bought the Prusa i3 Mk1 kit directly from the official Josef Prusa's shop, cause I wanted to support a great developper that was around since the boom of the RepRap project. The RepRap was conceived in the University of Bath and started this whole revolution by creating a low cost, open source, self-replicating machine.

I got the self-assembly kit cause I enjoyed like a kid the challenge of putting it all together!

Desde hace mucho tiempo he tenido el gusanillo de la impresión 3D y ahora, por fin, ¡me he comprado mi primera impresora!

Compré el kit Prusa i3 Mk1 directamente de la tienda oficial de Josef Prusa, porque quería contribuir a un gran desarrollador que ha estado presente desde el auge del proyecto RepRap. La RepRap se concibió en la Universidad de Bath y empezó toda esta revolución al crear una máquina de bajo coste, de código libre y autorreplicante.

¡Compré el kit de autoensamblaje porque disfruté como un niño el desafío de construirla! 

Calibration wasn't too hard. Bed level took a couple of test prints to be tuned and I was able to diagnose a problem in my first print and fix it: the Y axis was becoming more and more innacurate after every layer and it was due to an untight pulley (the grub screw is too small to be able to tighten it properly)

After that, I got pretty high quality prints, trying ABS and PLA, preferring the latter because ABS takes ages to heat. Here you can see details of my first prints, not bad, huh?

El calibrado no fue muy complicado. Nivelar la base se llevó un par de impresiones de prueba para ajustarla y fui capaz de diagnosticar un problema en mi primera impresión y arreglarlo: el eje Y se degeneraba más y más con cada capa y era porque la polea estaba suelta (el tornillo de la polea es tan pequeño que no se puede apretar fácilmente)

Después de eso, obtuve impresiones bastante buenas, probando ABS y PLA, prefiriendo el segundo ya que el ABS tarda mucho en calentar. Aquí puedes ver mis primeras piezas, nada mal, ¿eh?

Now starts a learning period to know all about the differences in materials and tricks to get good prints every time. 

Hopefully I'll find the time to do all kind of projects with it, from painted figurines to mechanical assemblies, from a prosthetic limb to jigs and fixtures, the possibilities are endless. Hey all, I just finished restoring this vintage hand tool and even though it could use further restoring I'm quite happy with the result, check the before and after:

Hola gente, acabo de terminar de restaurar esta antigua herramienta y aunque le vendría bien mejorarla un poco más estoy contento con el resultado, mirad el antes y el después: 

It is a Stanley Bailey No 5 plane, which I know nothing about but they seem to be valuable and popular online. I bought them (I got another, a smaller No4) with a whole lot of other tools in a garage clearance and because I would never use them (who has time for planing wood when you can just use plywood) I thought I could restore them and sell them.

Se trata de un cepillo para madera (garlopín, garlopa, aplanadora) de la marca Stanley Bailey, número 5, de la cual no tengo la menor idea, pero que parecen ser valiosas y populares en internet. Las compré (junto con otra más pequeña, número 4) en un lote con otras herramientas en una venta de garaje y debido a que nunca las voy a usar (quién tiene tiempo para aplanar madera cuando puedes usar contrachapado) pensé que podría restaurarlas y venderlas.

After disassembling all the individual parts, I soaked all the metallic ones on a vinegar bath (I used white distilled vinegar, watered down a bit) overnight. Afterwards, the rust comes off with the bare fingers. It's impressive how well it works. You can see the engraved 'Stanley' and 'Made in England' where there was only rust before.

Now if that was it rust would have come back quickly, as I learned with a previous vinegar experiment. So the process needs to be: Vinegar, dry; Baking soda bath for a few minutes, dry; and protecting with WD-40 to finish.

For the handles, I sanded them down a bit and applied some sort of oil or stain and they improved nicely. Overall, the tool got centuries younger and it's ready for another life.

Tras desmontar todas las piezas, puse las partes metálicas en un baño de vinagre (usé vinagre blanco destilado con un poco de agua) y lo dejé hasta el día siguiente. Tras este baño, el óxido se quita con los dedos sólamente. Es increíble lo bien que funciona. Ahora se puede leer "Stanley" y "Fabricado en Inglaterra" donde antes sólo había óxido.

Si eso fuera todo el óxido habría vuelto rápidamente, como aprendí con un experimento con vinagre previo. Por lo tanto el proceso ha de ser: vinagre, secar; un baño de sosa cáustica durante unos minutos y secar; para acabar proteger con WD-40.

En cuanto a los mangos, los lijé un poco y les apliqué un aceite que tenía y mejoraron sustancialmente. En conclusión, la herramienta ha rejuvenecido varios siglos y está lista para otra vida.

       

Now the bad news: as you can see in the above pictures, the base face had an unremovable surface defect, probably the rust ate that bit off. Also there is a missing part and screw that goes with it in the detailed picture on the right, I think it's a little plate that applies tension to the blade, but again, I have no idea how these work.

Although I sharpened the blade a bit, it will probably need further sharpening. The other improvement that I see would be restoring the black enamel layer, but I'll let its new owner decide if they want to do it or leave it.

Ahora las malas noticias: como se puede ver en las fotos superiores, la cara de la base tiene un defecto superficial que no he podido quitar, probablemente un trozo que se ha comido el óxido. También hay una pieza que falta y su tornillo, detallado en la foto de la derecha, creo que es una pequeña placa que aplica tensión a la cuchilla, pero de nuevo, no tengo ni idea de cómo funcionan estas herramientas.

Aunque afilé la cuchilla un poco, probablemente necesitará un mejor afilado. La otra mejora que veo es restaurar el esmalte negro, pero dejaré al nuevo dueño decidir si lo quiere hacer o dejarlo.

Edit 1/9/16: ¡Este cepillo y su hermana pequeña nº 4 estaban a la venta pero ya han sido vendidas!
